Navigating cancer in the workplace: what to do and how to provide support

A cancer diagnosis can be life-altering, but with the right support, recovery and dignity are possible. Whether you are facing cancer yourself, managing someone who is or supporting a colleague, here’s how to navigate the journey with care and confidence.

SELF-CARE

If you are diagnosed with cancer:

Start with transparency. Speak openly to your manager and Human Resources about your diagnosis, treatment plan and any adjustments you may need.

Prioritise your health. Use your leave and slow down, your recovery comes first.

Share when ready. Opening up can strengthen your support network, but only when you feel comfortable.

MANAGER

If you’re a manager:

Lead with empathy. Schedule regular check-ins and listen without judgment.

Be flexible. Tailor work arrangements to the individual’s needs, whether that is remote work, reduced hours or a phased return.

Inform and empower. Help your team members understand their leave options and available resources, including counselling and financial planning.

COLLEAGUE

If you are a colleague:

Listen with care. Avoid unsolicited advice or comparisons.

Offer practical help. Step in where needed, respectfully and without pressure.

Respect boundaries. Honour privacy and avoid spreading misinformation.
